TIMBER UTILISATION

Glasgow Metropolital College

A Glasgow college recently started using timber from trees grown in the city. The pilot project to reduce timber going to landfill seeks to develop a local market and support social enterprise.

Glasgow Metropolitan College originally approached the Woodland Unit to supply timber for furniture restoration and design courses. The first delivery of logs took place earlier this year, and work recently begun to convert the round logs into sawn boards.

The college is committed to using locally sourced timber and is investing in a timber drying kiln to season the boards. This will improve the student’s skills and enable the college to demonstrate the value of timber grown locally.

Sawmilling for the project is supplied by Galgael. Govan based, this social enterprise works to train course participents for the working environment and develop cultural awareness.

Through this and similar projects local timber use will reduce landfill volumes, generate income for woodland management, and support education and training.
